Brixton Public Rights Of Way

As a rural community we are very fortunate to be able to access our beautiful countryside through the local public rights of way.

In addition to the long established public footpaths, we have recently been enjoying additional walks on "permissive paths". These permissive paths were set up between the Trustees of South Barton Farm and DEFRA (Department of Farming & Rural affairs) on a stewardship programme. The agreement had a ten year life and this expired in October 2007.

The Parish Council recently opened negotiations with the owners to find a new scheme which would allow the previous permissive paths to be reopened.

Regrettably, we have been advised by Luscombe Maye, the land agents, that "there is currently no way that these permissive paths can be re-opened in the foreseeable future".

There is a new tenant farmer at South Barton and he will be grazing sheep on the land which was previously arable land. The shooting rights have also been let.

Please therefore be vigilant if you are dog walking on the public footpaths and ensure that your dog cannot get into any of the sheep fields. If in doubt, please keep your dog on a lead. There is a risk that your dog may be shot by the farmer if it is found to be, or considered to be, sheep worrying.
