This is an informal group that meets on the third Wednesday of the month at Venn Court from 7.00 pm to 9.00 pm. We meet to share our love of reading, having read books from a suggested list. These are for discussion in the meeting - Wednesday 18th January at 7.00 p.m. at Venn Court. PRIZE-WINNERS The Human Stain by Philip Roth Recently filmed and starring Anthony Hopkins, this novel is set in 1998. It concerns the disgrace and downfall of Coleman Silk, a classics professor at New England's small Athena College. His life descends into scandal after accusations of racism and an affair; yet he has a truly dark secrecy hidden in his past. The skillful revelation of this really grips the reader. Life of Pi by Yann Martel This amazing fantasy centres on the Muslim-Christian-animistic Piscine Molitor Patel. After a vibrant upbringing, he embarks on a voyage for Canada. When his boat is scuppered, he finds himself in a lifeboat with a hyena, a monkey, a zebra and a tiger called Richard. The creatures turn on each other until Pi is left alone with Richard. They wander the oceans, pondering on their fate and the need for survival. The astonishing use of allegory really does deserve your attention. The Siege by Helen Dunmore This is a book that has jaw-dropping skill in its use of the English language. It is a painful, but brilliant evocation of the Siege of Leningrad. The attention to detail heightens the reader's experience as the experiences of Anna Levin are recounted. The descent into winter brings a horrid numbness to everything which is also vividly portrayed; yet when taste returns, even the reader is awakened! Georgiana, Duchess of Devonshire by Amanda Foreman An utterly mesmerising read. Georgiana Spencer became Duchess of Devonshire in 1774 and proceeded to become the undisputed queen of fashionable society, an influential hostess and an important figure in the Whig party. Yet her story is one of cruel disappointments and personal suffering. One critic summed it up succinctly and accurately: "Not only a pungent, intimate blend of biography and history, but a provocative contribution to our understanding of women of the past".
The local Library - or the Travelling Library - will get the books for you. Do come along and join in. There is no charge. For details of the books, please ring Graham on 01752 881638 or Liz Hitchins 880715 for any further information. |

DIAMOND
JUBILEE CELEBRATIONS FOR THE QUEEN |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Celebrating the Diamond Jubilee and the Arrival of the Olympic Torch in Brixton 2012 Brixton Parish Council, together with other organisations in the community, is starting to plan how we celebrate the Diamond Jubilee this year. We are looking at community events e.g. street party/parties, exhibition of memorabilia from 1952 and during the last 60 years, a thanksgiving service, etc. We would also like your ideas - traditional and contemporary on how we can make this a unique event in Brixton - contact Debbie White on 880634 or email her debbie.white12@mypostoffice.co.uk with your suggestions. Brixton is also on the route for the Olympic Torch on Sunday 20th May 2012. The Parish Council is setting up a group to coordinate the activities and celebrations for the Jubilee in June and the Arrival of the Olympic Torch in May. The first meeting will be on Thursday 26th January in the Royal British Legion HQ by Tuscany starting at 7.30 p.m. Everyone will be welcome to bring their ideas etc for both events to make this a special summer for the Parish. Contact Debbie White for more information. Are you, or is someone you know, celebrating a 60th birthday or anniversary in Brixton in 2012. If you are, let us know and celebrate your special year as part of the Diamond Jubilee. |
